Starting a company inside a company

What running a technology venture inside BAE Systems taught me about testing ideas, building a team and making room for innovation.

What I did there

I launched and led the business unit as CEO, recruited and developed a team of around six, and worked on a new commercial approach. When the pandemic arrived, I designed an all-virtual operating model so the team could keep delivering workshops and technical projects.

Steve Chan is an entrepreneur and technology advisor in Dubai, and the founder of ChanStudio, his entrepreneurial studio: he builds tech companies and advises founders building theirs. At BAE Systems he built Milkfloat, a startup inside the company, then spent five years at Microsoft leading innovation across the UK public sector. He left in 2025 to co-found Stealth Labs, an AI studio in the UK, and moved to Dubai in 2026. Today he is building Forgeai and Earworm and developing the podcast Channel Chan. His advisory combines technical judgement, founder experience and an understanding of large organisations to help B2B and AI founders make product decisions and prepare their technology for enterprise customers.
